Coppicing and topsoil removal promote diversity of dung‐inhabiting beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae, Geotrupidae, Staphylinidae) in forests

چکیده
Central European forests experience a substantial loss of open-forest organisms due to forest management and increasing nitrogen deposition. However, strategies, removing different levels nitrogen, have been rarely evaluated simultaneously. We tested the additive effects coppicing topsoil removal on communities dung-inhabiting beetles compared closed forests. sampled 57 021 beetles, using baited pitfall traps exposed 27 plots. Experimental treatments resulted in significantly by promoting open-habitat species. While alpha diversity did not differ among treatments, gamma Geotrupidae Scarabaeidae beta Staphylinidae were higher coppice than forest. Functional rove was both, topsoil-removed plots, control This likely driven habitat heterogeneity established openings. Five dung beetle species four benefitted from coppicing, one red-listed two removal. Our results demonstrate that related open patches can be promoted additional A mosaic bare-soil-rich hence promote landscape-level within

The study presents taxonomic account of 52 species of dung beetles belonging to 22 genera, 12 tribes, 04 subtribes, 05 subfamilies and 03 families viz. Scarabaeidae, Geotrupidae and Hybosoridae from Chhattisgarh. Interactive identification keys to the subfamilies, tribes, genera and species were prepared by studying thoroughly the morphological characters of all the dung beetles specimens colle...

متن کاملSpecies Diversity and Seasonal Abundance of Scarabaeoid Dung Beetles (coleoptera: Scarabaeidae, Geotrupidae and Trogidae) Attracted to Cow Dung in Central New Jersey
—Species diversity and abundance of scarabaeoid dung beetles (Coleoptera) attracted to fresh cow dung were studied in three habitats of New Jersey: Hutcheson Memorial Forest (HMF) disturbed field, HMF old growth forest, and Rutgers University Bovine Farm. Over a one year period, baited pitfall traps yielded a total of 15,206 beetles representing at least 26 species. Onthophagus hecate was a dom...
متن کاملEffectiveness of hand removal for small-scale management of Japanese beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae).
Hand removal is often recommended as a method for small-scale control of Japanese beetles (Popillia japonica Newman). In this study, we investigated the effectiveness of daily hand removal for controlling damage by Japanese beetles on grape plants. We also investigated whether the timing of the removal (at 0800, 1400, or 1900 hours, or at all 3 periods) influenced the effectiveness of the techn...
متن کاملIridoid biosynthesis in staphylinid rove beetles (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae, Philonthinae).
The biosynthesis of chrysomelidial and plagiodial was studied in the rove beetle subtribe Philonthina (Staphylinidae). Glandular homogenates were found to convert synthetic (2E,6E)-[trideuteromethyl-5,5-(2)H(5)]octa-2,6-diene-1,8-diol (10) into nor-chrysomelidial (14) and nor-plagiodial (13). The overall transformation requires; i) oxidation of the substrate at C(1) and C(8), ii) cyclization of...
